Getting Started¶
New to Ghelmyon? This is the front door. Get into the game, learn the handful of commands that matter, and do one of everything in your first ten minutes. When you're ready to go deeper, every section links to a full guide.
Ghelmyon is a text-driven narrative RPG you play in your browser. You type
plain commands - look, go square, attack, talk innkeeper - and the world
responds. There's no twitch reflex and nothing to download.
Step 1 - Get into the game¶
Ghelmyon is in closed alpha, so you need an invite code to make an account.
| Where | maxwellcranston.com |
| What you need | An invite code (closed alpha) |
| Returning? | Just Log in - your character and progress are saved |
With a code in hand:
- Open maxwellcranston.com and hit Play.
- Choose Register, enter your invite code, and pick a username + password.
- Create your character - name, race, and class. New players: take the Wanderer (forgiving, jack-of-all-trades) and any race you like; you can make more characters later.
- You'll wake into the Academy - the safe tutorial zone. You're in.
How you play
Type commands into the box and press enter. If you're ever lost, three
commands get you un-stuck anywhere: look (what's around me),
exits (where can I go), and help (the in-game manual).
Step 2 - Your first ten minutes¶
You don't need to read a manual to start. Do one of each of these right now - they're the whole game in miniature.
Fight something¶
The Academy has a combat room with a practice dummy that can't hurt you.
attack dummy
You'll see the turn play out - your stance, your hit, the result. That's combat:
pick a target, attack, read what happens, repeat. → Full rules in
Combat 101.
Talk to someone¶
NPCs are people, not menus. Start a conversation and they'll respond in character:
talk instructor
From there you can ask about the world, take quests, trade, or just chat. Most of the game's depth - bonds, romance, blackmail, faction standing - grows out of talking. → See the Verb Cheat Sheet for everything you can say and do.
Make a little money¶
Out in town, head to a training venue for your class and work a shift - the core money-and-skills loop:
go <venue>
/shift start
You walk out with coin and skill points. You can also sell loot to vendors
(sell <item>) or take paid jobs off the notice board (next). → The full
economy is in First Day in Ghelmyon.
Explore - and read the notice board¶
Movement is just exits then go:
exits
go square
In Town Square you'll find the notice board - read it:
read board
The board is the town's job listing: bounties, errands, escorts, and rumours. It's the fastest way to find something to do. Boards in later articles unlock heists, faction work, and seasonal events. → Bounties & Wanted.
Step 3 - Keep going (the walkthrough)¶
You've now fought, talked, earned, and explored. The New Player Walkthrough takes it from here, in order:
- First Hour - the Academy - the full guided tutorial. Every verb the engine expects, room by room. Start here.
- First Day in Ghelmyon - out of the Academy: the five districts, your first vendor trade, first NPC bond, first inn.
- First Week - the skill ladder clicks; your first faction at Friendly; your first named gear.
- First Heist - week two and beyond: the clickable scene system and the four-phase heist loop.
Pick a class that fits you
Each class has its own onramp guide (where to go, what to buy, who to bring) see the class onramps on the Articles page.
The three commands to remember¶
| Command | Does |
|---|---|
look |
Describe where you are and what's here |
exits then go <place> |
See your exits, then travel |
help |
Open the in-game manual (or help <topic>) |
Everything else you'll pick up by playing. Welcome to Ghelmyon.
