Cleric¶
"Pray. Bless. Smite. In that order. Or sometimes mid-fight, all three at once."
Role: Faith-based healer + buffer. Channels divine power to heal allies, buff the party, and smite hostiles. Your Charisma reads sermons; your Faith reads scripture; your mace reads heads.

First 30 minutes¶
You start with Lay on Hands - your signature spell. It's a heal. On allies. (See QW89 below before you cast.)
-
Visit the Temple of the Dawn.
walk to temple talk priestYour trainer access and quest chain both start here.
-
Practice Lay on Hands - but on an ally or yourself, not a target. Free healing for 15 HP at rank 0; scales with Faith.
cast lay_on_handsDon't self-cast in front of Town Guard
Casting heal on yourself with a target locked used to trigger the assault-against-self bug (QW89). Fixed in 2026-05-23 - but if you see "Lay on Hands attacks Toddy" in your output, file a bug.
-
Buy mana potions. Cleric magic is mana-gated; you'll burn through 2-3 per real fight.
-
Read the notice board. Temple-aligned quests pay rep + gold.
Skills to focus first¶
- Lay on Hands (3 → 5) - heal scaling. Eventually heals 60+ HP.
- Channel Divine (3 → 5) - buffs allies' damage for a turn.
- Mace Strike (4 → 6) - Cleric can fight; you're not a Bard.
After Faith Magic rank 5, branch into Healer (consumable-free sustain), Battle Priest (smite/buff hybrid), or Inquisitor (undead/demon focus, holy strike specialist).
Suggested merc team¶
Wrecking Crew - two big front-line damage dealers means you have targets to heal. Cleric is best when allies are taking hits; solo Cleric is fine, but you waste the kit.
Quest or grind?¶
Quests. Temple chain runs deep and pays well. Plus the upcoming hospice shift mechanic (BG88, in development) will let you grind heal SP on injured NPC patients - no combat required.
Mid-game arc¶
- Hit Faith Magic rank 5 - specialty path unlock.
- Reach Temple friendly rep - full hospice access, premium buffs from temple-only NPCs.
- Pick Healer / Battle Priest / Inquisitor - three very different end-games.
Known pitfalls¶
- Lay on Hands on a hostile target routes to attack (parser quirk).
Always specify ally or self:
cast lay_on_hands selforcast lay_on_hands grigg. - Friendly-fire smite - Holy Strike on an ally is rejected (you can't smite a friend) but the engine emits a warning. Targeted carefully.
Training & Practice¶
Where the work happens between adventures.
Head to the Temple Hospice Wing (temple_hospice_wing, attached to
the Temple of the Dawn). Talk to Sister Miriam - she runs the wing,
signs the ledger, and decides which tier of patients you're ready for.
How it works:
/shift startat the wing (or/hospice_shift start) to take a 4-hour shift. Sister Miriam posts a queue of patients scaled to your rank - scraped knees and travel-fever at the bottom, deep wounds and lingering poisons at the top.- Heal patients on the queue. Cast your healing spells (Lay on Hands, cure-wounds, cure-poison) on whoever's name is up - each successful cast credits the shift if the patient is on the active list. Routine triage credits Field Medicine and Healing; the harder tickets credit Faith Magic parent SP. Plus a small stipend per patient resolved.
/shift endto close early (or let the timer expire).
Tier ladder (Sister Miriam decides): easy → standard → challenging → esoteric. Higher tiers pay more and unlock the harder ward rooms; acolytes start at easy and earn the heavier cases by keeping the routine ones clean.
Why bother:
- Steady SP without taking a sword to the ribs.
- Modest purse per resolved patient (temple stipend, not adventuring pay).
- Twenty clean shifts typically earn a referral letter the other city temples honor - opens doors at sibling hospices in other towns.
- Sister Miriam teaches up to rank 70 in faith / healing / field medicine.
Capstone - Mass Restoration¶
Unlocked at rank 30 in faith magic. Full-heal yourself and every party member in the same location, and remove every active debuff from all of you.
Light unfurls in a sphere around you. Every wound closes; every poison loosens; every fear lifts.
Once per long rest. The capstone that makes a 4-person party survive fights that would otherwise wipe them. Save it for the moment three of them are about to drop.
