Talking to People

"You don't pick a dialogue option in Ghelmyon. You say a thing, or you ask a thing, and the person in front of you answers like a person. It takes a minute to trust - then you won't want menus back."

Conversation here isn't a menu of canned replies. You speak or you ask, and NPCs respond in character. That freedom trips up new players for about ten minutes - this is the page that gets you past it.

At a glance

Speak to the room '<message> (leading apostrophe) or say <message>
Speak to one person "<name> <message> (leading quote) or talk <name>
Ask about something ask <name> about <topic>
Quietly whisper <name> <message>
Roleplay a gesture emote <action> or :<action>
No menus You type what you say; NPCs answer in character

The two keystrokes that do most of the work

You rarely need a verb to talk. Two punctuation marks cover it:

  • ' - a leading apostrophe speaks to the whole room.
    • 'is anyone selling rope? → you say it aloud; everyone present hears.
  • " - a leading quote speaks to one person (name first).
    • "dalla good morning → you greet Dalla specifically.

That's the fast path. The verbs below do the same things with more control.

Speaking - say, talk, whisper

  • say <message> - speak aloud to the room (same as the ' shortcut).
  • talk <name> - open a focused conversation with someone. Good when you want to settle in and keep talking to one person.
  • whisper <name> <message> - say it quietly; only the named person hears. For when the room shouldn't.
  • tell <name> <something> - share a specific piece of information with someone.
  • greet nods to whoever's nearest; farewell / bye ends a chat politely.

Browser tip: clicking an NPC focuses them so you can see who you're dealing with. To actually speak to them, use "<name> … or talk <name> - the quote/verb is what tells the game who you mean.

Asking - where the depth is

The single most rewarding conversation verb:

  • ask <name> about <topic> - NPCs know things: their work, the town, rumors, people, places. Asking about the right topic pulls threads you'd never get from a menu.
    • ask the dockmaster about the night shipment
    • ask marta about her sister

If you only learn one social command, learn this one. Quests, secrets and leads live behind it. Try the obvious topic, then try the thing they just mentioned.

Emotes - saying it without words

  • emote <action> - perform a roleplay action.
  • :<action> - the shorthand (a leading colon).
    • :raises an eyebrow · :slides a coin across the bar

Emotes are pure flavor, but tone matters - how you carry yourself colors how people read you.

The expressive verbs - persuasion, charm, mischief

Conversation isn't only information. These verbs act on the person you're talking to (many roll against their perception or disposition):

  • lie <claim> - say something untrue. Sharp NPCs may catch it.
  • joke <to/at> <name> - crack a joke; their reaction is rolled.
  • flirt <name> [topic] / charm <name> - a playful or romantic approach (topics: compliment / romantic / tease / joke / charm). See Romance for where it can lead.
  • convince <name> to move to <town> - talk someone into relocating.
  • propose <name> / divorce <name> - for relationships that reach that point.

How the game knows who you mean

If your words could be aimed at several people, be explicit:

  • Lead with "<name> to target by name, or
  • talk <name> first to focus the conversation, then keep speaking.
  • A bare ' or say is always the whole room - use it when you want everyone to hear.

When in doubt, name them. "<name> never guesses.
